They did allow the FBI to look at the server, via the industry-standard procedure called digital forensic imaging. This is the standard for all incident response, and is detailed in the National Institute of Standards and Technology publication NIST 800-86.

It’s a pretty technically dense book, aimed at IT professionals who do this for a living. It’s been developed over the past decade.

There is zero need for the FBI to “take the server”. This isn’t a movie or TV show, there are no fingerprints to dust for. It’s all digital. I’ve done IT for over 20 years, and managed my share of incident responses. Everything was done correctly and “by the book”; there is no nefarious plot or conspiracy here.
