Dreams dancing on your tongue

A lot of folks find craft beer intimidating. A beer known by the name Sugar Plum Fairy likely isn’t one that invokes fear.

It was the beer I tackled on this week’s Sporting Chance Podcast, along with the topics of bringing fights back to weeknights and making a case for giving NASCAR a chance. Listen for the sports and beer, and keep reading for a quick summary of the plum, more beer and a really cool brewery story.

Plums you say?

My family was a fan of plums so i had more than a few growing up. What’s interesting about the plum is that it is one of the oldest domesticated fruits in recorded history. Believed to have originated in Iran, ancient plum remains have been found right alongside olives, grapes and figs.

Plums have been used in beverages for just as long. It is more commonly found in wine. The fruit itself can range from tart to sweet, and the juice is fermented into wine. Those wines can have some tartness, but are more commonly aromatic and sweet. Plums seem like a natural fit to use for beer, but they need something to balance them.

The Beer Review

Alphabet City Brewing Company has their unique take on a plum beer, invoking the classic Christmas image of sugar plum fairies…
