How to create a repeating #ResponsiveCoffee meetup community

It’s happening!

People around the globe are meeting up locally as part of the worldwide ResponsiveOrg community.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. If there’s already a reoccurring ResponsiveCoffee meetup in your city, you can join the community already started. So far they’re repeating in London, UK and Mexico DF, Mexico.
  2. If not, start a Meetup group on http://www.meetup.com/ — if you do this there will be a charge to pay and policy to agree to that you’d be responsible for. This seems to be a great tool because it helps spread awareness of your meetup group with people that may be interested, suggests keywords of communities it may be similar to (example in FAQs below), and it’s easy to set the meetup to repeat frequently.
  3. You could call the first meetup ResponsiveCoffee, and set it to repeat. For example in London, UK, we have a ResponsiveCoffee on the first Friday of every month.
  4. Cross post each of your meetups on the ResponsiveOrg Meetup Everywhere site. This will help people from the broader Responsive Org community discover your local meetup.
  5. Let people know you have setup the repeating community meeting in your city by sharing: on Twitter with the #ResponsiveOrg hashtag; in our LinkedIn group, and Facebook group. We’ll get it listed on this post too.

Let us know any questions and we’ll add them here. Let’s lead this change!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which keywords do you use when setting up the ResponsiveOrg meetup group?

Whatever you think is relevant. In London we used: Marketing · Innovation · Social Networking · Social Enterprise · New Technology · Business Strategy · Collaboration · Startup Businesses · Social Innovation · Social Entrepreneurship · Employee Engagement · Creativity · Workplace · Organisation design · Organisational culture.

What do we actually do during the ResponsiveCoffee meetup?

It’s up to you. Think about catering for different people’s desires and needs. Having said that we have some ideas that might be helpful. For example, here’s what we did in the first London one:

When enough people arrived, each of us gave a brief introduction and what we’d like to get out of the #ResponsiveCoffee. We then had a couple of Responsive Org Discussion Scales (that we’d made in advance) and started a conversation about where our orgs would be on the scale. We split into smaller groups to do this, and when we had about ten minutes remaining we reformed one larger group and each shared the most valuable nugget we took away from the conversation. What’s terrific is that we have the meetup group to stay in touch with each other and here about future meetups.

You can add a comment to this post with any ideas. Some more practical tips are here.

Why are we using Meetup Groups *and* Meetup Everywhere?

They both seem to be amazing in different ways. For example, Meetup Groups is terrific as spreading awareness of the events and easily setting the meetups to repeat at a regular rhythm. Meetup Everywhere is great at helping anyone see where meetups are happening all around the globe, and enables anyone to setup an-adhoc meetup for free.

What’s in it for me to pay for and run a repeating meetup?

It’s been a great way for me to easily find, meet and learn from a network of people leading the shift in how companies adapt, learn, and respond to an ever changing world.
