THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD EDIT & WHY YOU WANT TO GIVE YOUR EDITS A BREAK

You should know by now that how you edit your photo is just as important as the subject of your photo, and if you don’t…well now you do. Editing is so important because it can completely change the mood of your image. I started a series on my YouTube channel that explorers this theory called “1 Photo 3 Styles”, you can watch it here if you’d like. The different tones, colors, and saturations you choose all play a big part in giving off a particular mood and emotion in your image…and that’s why you should take a break when editing your photos.

This is something I only recently discovered the benefits of, taking a break when editing. This is how I used to go about editing my photos: get back from shooting, import the new photos into Lightroom, edit all of them in one sitting, and then go eat something. Sound familiar? You might do the same! Fast forward to today and this is how I now go about editing my photos: get back from shooting, import the new photos into Lightroom, edit them all once, grab a snack or go do something else productive, come back and give all the photos another round of editing, and then finally go and eat!

What I realized when I went back to edit my photos again is that the first round of editing didn’t do the photos justice. The photos just didn’t look as good as they could.

I believe this is because when you edit your photos in one sitting, you’re only focusing on the small changes you make instead of focusing on the image as a whole. That’s why it’s best to take a little break from editing, because when you get back into Lightroom and see your photos for the first time…again…you take the whole image in instead of seeing only the small incremental changes you made.

And this doesn’t only apply to photography, this can apply to writing, videography, music, and any other creative discipline as well; because in every creative discipline you’re editing or refining your work. And when you edit or refine your work it is very important to make a little time for a break, so you can cool off and focus on something else for a bit, and maybe even get a different perspective on your work when you get back to it.

That’s all from me for today, I hope you enjoyed the post. If you did, be sure to share it on social media or with your friends, it would mean the world to me! Also, I’d love to hear your opinion and thoughts on the subject. Do you think you should NOT take a break when editing? If that’s the case, then why? Let me know in the comment!
