Barring women from participating in a merit-making act is indeed perplexing. There are numerous ways one can make merit in Burma, most of which do not preclude women.

Similarly, another one of Burma’s holiest sites, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, also bars women from applying a golden leaf to a massive boulder that balances on the edge of a cliff.

In Burma, women can make merit and increase their karma, but apparently, only to a certain extent.
