Matt Kupec College Football Analysis
Father & Son Impressions from College Football’s Opening Weekend

What a spectacular weekend of college football we just enjoyed. A full slate of football games to officially open the college football season always makes the Labor Day Weekend all the better. There were some important games with teams predicted to be contending for a playoff spot, there were a significant number of weather delays and, of course, we had plenty of heroics. Each week my son Matthew and I will review the weekend games and make a few observations and provide some thorough analysis. Biggest Surprise
- Matthew Kupec — two entries here. The offenses of Michigan and Florida. Michigan was because of their inability to make plays and the poor game management at the end of the game. Florida’s offense looked like a throwback to Steve Spurrier’s Old Fun and Gun offense. Felipe Franks throwing for 5 TD’s and looking comfortable in the offense brought back memories of Danny Wuerffel.
- Matt Kupec — I would have to go with the surprise upset of Cincinnati over UCLA in Chip Kelly’s return back to college football. Coach Kelly had such an offensive machine at Oregon before he left for the pros. I think we all expected him to jump right in on his return and have his offense rolling. But losing transfer QB Speight to injury during the game and having to play a true freshman led to UCLA’s ineffectiveness on offense.
Best Performance
- Matthew Kupec — tie between the offenses of UCF, Ole Miss and West Virginia. All three quarterbacks — McKenzie Milton, Jordan Ta’amu and Will Grier — all looked great. UCF has big play ability and seems to make a big play on every drive. With Ta’amu, Ole Miss didn’t miss a beat without the departed Shea Patterson. And Will Grier’s outstanding play against Tennessee where he threw 5 TD passes and 429 yards.
- Matt Kupec — I love watching Will Grier sling the ball over the field and against Tennessee he was slinging it! 5 TD’s and 429 yards is a great way to start the march to a possible Heisman Trophy!
Biggest Disappointment
- Matthew Kupec — Arizona’s use of Khalil Tate. Or should I say, Arizona’s lack of using Khalil’s running ability. He ran the ball only 8 times for 14 yards. He is the most prolific running QB in college and one has to question the offensive strategy of the Arizona coaching staff.
- Matt Kupec — I’m going to go with the start of my Tar Heels in their opener against the Cal Bears. The Heels look totally inept in the first half! 0–8 on third down plays and only 1 first down. At the least in the second half the Tar Heels showed some grit and where within an onside kick recovery of having a chance to tie the game at the end.
Early Picks for the Final 4 Playoff Teams
- Matthew — Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Oklahoma
- Matt — Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma
