Jerry Maguire Experiment
I recently had a friend pass away. She’s spent much of her life as a recruiter and all of her life as an advocate. We spent a ton of time talking about how broken the current recruiting system is, about gender inequality in the workplace and about how people and their employers could be set up to be aligned and maximum success. I was supposed to meet her a few days after she died to help her think about what a new model could like.
In short, the idea is to have agents that represent highly talented professionals the same way athletes or performers are represented. What we were talking about was working with women in particular, as we both have observed overtime that women are less likely to negotiate up front and advocate for themselves on an ongoing basis. If you want to see this in action, take a look at tech companies and see how women are “Director of XYZ” — it seems to be a convenient spot to hold people as the next step often comes with inclusion in bonus plans, better vesting provisions, better severance programs, etc.
So, in honor of my friend, I’m thinking about doing an experiment. I’m looking for up to three people who are feel under-appreciated in their current role but also are not ready to move forward with a job search. What I’d love to do is the following:
- Help you define what you need to be happy and productive at work. This is actually quite fine and powerful.
- Help identify potential opportunities, confidentially.
- Help you negotiate a fair compensation package. And when I say compensation I don’t just mean money and equity, I mean making sure you’re set up to have what you’ve defined in Step 1 which likely includes things like work/life balance, some level of autonomy, etc.
- Once you join the new company, we’ll check in once a month to see where you are relative to what you defined in Step 1.
- When it comes time for performance reviews, I will help you prepare and will also force you to be honest with yourself.
Does this sound good to you? If so, email me at matt.d.lauzon@gmail.com with a couple sentences on why. I promise to keep it 100% confidential regardless of whether or not we choose to work together.
