Here’s what I don’t get.

Let’s say the Mueller investigation survives the the ongoing attempts and inevitable theatrics to derail it. Comes back with an even bigger assortment of criminal/treasonous behavior than has been hinted at. Some of these crimes will be hard for the average American to follow (intricate real estate money laundering stuff), but some of them, particularly anything lurid or sex-related, will be obvious and self-explanatory.

Everyone watches this unfold and says “wow this is terrible and these are crimes and he needs to be impeached.” Even the House GOP, which has rediscovered their spine as his ratings plummet past 20.

We know what Trump will do because he’s telegraphing it already. The Bundy standoff provided the blueprint. He will call for heavily-armed “patriotic” volunteers to surround the WH and protect him. Paint it as some apocalyptic Last Stand against (((Globalists))) and people who don’t want to Make America Great Again. We know this because he has shown exactly zero compunction when it comes to disregarding decorum or shame if it keeps him afloat. And his tendency is to escalate.

But, you say, the marshals or FBI or I guess Justice League could force their way through the protestors and counter-protestors, past the TV cameras, through the now-silent hallways and drag him out of the Oval Office.

And if you’re the marshals you HAVE to go in like that. Openly, methodically. In full view of the TV cameras. To do otherwise or in secret would just invite more conspiracy mongering.

This though makes it likely that someone will make a move given the tension and scale of what’s happening. Maybe someone throws something (a punch, a brick) and all hell breaks loose and now you have the spectacle of Americans shooting each other down on the sidewalk in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Which in turn means whatever Mueller has on him has to be so overwhelmingly, shockingly bad (and hopefully captured on video) that it temporarily paralyzes his supporters. Like well past “dead girl/live boy” bad. Something that leaves no question of clemency, of pardon or even comprehension. Something that buys a day or two. That’s the window. That’s when you go in.

If it’s less than that, if it’s “well he was sneaky with some of the financing for his overseas hotels” or “well he did business through intermediaries with people who may or may not be Russian gangsters” it won’t stick. It’ll leave too much uncertainty in the narrative and that will open the door long enough for Fox News, AM radio, Russian bots and general confusion to work their unholy magic.

And that’s when you’ll know the American experiment is over. Because like all budding dictators before him, he will now go to work on the media, on the military, on the GOP, on the Democrats, on literally everything that is Not Him and the window will have closed for good.
