Hi Jono

Even with LiDAR on a chip, I believe the power draw will be too high for a mobile or HMD device. Dense 3D reconstruction via mono RGB cameras is coming and will be highly accurate (resolution can be very fine, mostly limited by memory on the device and tuning the UX for occlusion— ie you want fine resolution for small up close objects, and less resolution for objects far away).

Perfect occlusion will take many many years (eg partial occlusion due to a person with curly hair being in front of the virtual model…). Generally being acurate to about 5mm per voxel for up close structures is plenty good enough to convince people, as long as additional cues such as shadows/lighting/textures are all pretty good, and physics and the animated response of the object to the physical obect are done believably.
