Inner Piece: Transgenderism is a Mental Disorder.

“I always knew,” Jordan Geddes, a trans man in Columbia, Maryland, said. “But I grew up and had the whole world telling me I’m wrong. At that point [as a child in the 1990s], there was no visibility whatsoever about trans issues. My parents just assumed I’m a very butch lesbian.” — Vox

I’ve been reading a lot of articles about transgenderism from both sides of the argument. I was sitting down with a friend of mine having a discussion about what are thoughts were about the matter, and he sent me an article via VOX.com titled Transgender People: Ten Common Myths. It’s not so much an article as these little bullet points that you can open up to short little articles about each point. While perusing the points another article came up in my news feed on Facebook from the American College of Pediatrics (acpeds) titled Gender Ideology Harms Children. The two articles coincide with each other on some issues, but the premises of both are very different. The Vox article is very much about Transgender as a whole, and the acpeds article dealt specifically with children.

I just want to address a few specific points from the Vox article, compare it to the acpeds article, and then compare those points of views with the Bible. I will admit something. I am not claiming to be an expert in transgenderism, and am in no way shape or form saying I am, but I am a person with an opinion on the subject matter and am still learning. *These articles do, however, support my personal beliefs and biases on the matter.

Reading over the Vox article I want to address some specific points. The first being point one, or what they say is myth one. Transgender people are confused or tricking other.

The most pervasive myth about transgender people — and the one myth that underpins much of the discrimination they face — is that they’re somehow confused or actively misleading others by identifying with a gender different from the one assigned to them at birth. — Vox

This point coincides with point eight, or myth eight. Transgender people are mentally ill.

The APA ( American Psychiatric Association,) explained this in explicit terms when it stopped using the term “gender identity disorder” in favor of “gender dysphoria”: “Part of removing stigma is about choosing the right words. Replacing ‘disorder’ with ‘dysphoria’ in the diagnostic label is not only more appropriate and consistent with familiar clinical sexology terminology, it also removes the connotation that the patient is ‘disordered.’” — Vox

The points, I feel, coincide with each other because it is to say there is nothing wrong with transgender people in as far as mentally, whether that be confusion or mental illness. I can personally believe that transgender people are confused until I’m blue in the face, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m correct in that view. However, when I look at the article from acpeds I find this,

A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. When an otherwise healthy biological boy believes he is a girl, or an otherwise healthy biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such. These children suffer from gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria (GD), formerly listed as Gender Identity Disorder (GID), is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V). The psychodynamic and social learning theories of GD/GID have never been disproved. — acpeds

Every point has footnotes added as well which lead to articles that support each point. So here the acpeds says that at best gender dysphoria is a sign of confused thinking.

Myth #9: Transgender people make up a third gender
Most transgender people explicitly identify as male or female. They aren’t part of a third gender — they are, by all intents and purposes, men and women. — Vox

This article has to do with transgenderism and not gender-queer or gender fluid individuals, but I do want to touch on this subject. Even though transgender individuals do not see them selves as a third gender they do see themselves as something other than the biological sex that they are. The acpeds addresses this and concedes that there is no third gender, but also adds transgender individuals will remain biologically male and biologically female.

No one is born with an awareness of themselves as male or female; this awareness develops over time and, like all developmental processes, may be derailed by a child’s subjective perceptions, relationships, and adverse experiences from infancy forward. People who identify as “feeling like the opposite sex” or “somewhere in between” do not comprise a third sex. They remain biological men or biological women. -acpeds

The last point I will address is what Vox calls Myth #7 “Children aren’t old enough to know their gender identity”. Vox finds that this isn’t true quoting a study from the TransYouthProject that states some children as early as five years old respond to “psychological gender-association tests” which evaluates how individuals view their own gender identity. But acpeds does not agree.

Moreover, neuroscience reveals that the pre-frontal cortex of the brain which is responsible for judgment and risk assessment is not mature until the mid-twenties. Never has it been more scientifically clear that children and adolescents are incapable of making informed decisions regarding permanent, irreversible and life-altering medical interventions. For this reason, the College maintains it is abusive to promote this ideology, first and foremost for the well-being of the gender dysphoric children themselves, and secondly, for all of their non-gender-discordant peers, many of whom will subsequently question their own gender identity, and face violations of their right to bodily privacy and safety. — acpeds

Acpeds states that 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused females eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.

To me this evidence strongly suggests that transgenderism is in fact confusion of a biological truth. Acpeds states that human sexuality is binary, male and female, by design with the obvious purpose being the reproduction and flourishing of our species, and that this is a self-evident principle that gender is a sociological and psychological concept; not an objective biological one.

I’m going to close with Genesis 5:2, “ He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.” Whether you read the Genesis account as literally or allegorical or figurative if you read it as the Word of God this is the design. Male and female He created the two sexes, therefore anything that deviates from that creation is confusion or a disorder of human design.

*This article is not here for me to tell people how they ought to live their lives, however that does not mean I can not see something as right or wrong. This blog is an outlet for me to be able to express my opinions, and that is what I am doing, and this is my explanation on how I see the world. Yes, I am writing to sway opinion or there would be no point in publishing this article, but again I can’t tell people how to live. I can, however, let people know what I think.

*added to further articulate that these are opinions and biases based on personal beliefs.
