31 Days of Halloween: Day 19 — V/H/S/2 (2013)

US VoD poster for V/H/S/2 (2013)

What is it?

V/H/S/2 is a horror anthology about a collection of cursed tapes and the people hunting them down. It’s a loose sequel to the first film which saw a gang of burglars break into a house in search of one valuable tape in particular. The setup for both V/H/S films is that we have the wraparound (finding the tapes) and then watching them along with the characters, which is where the segments come into play. This film has vastly superior entries to the first’s overstuffed and overlong entry.

Why should I watch it?

Zombies. Aliens. Ghosts. Cults. You have almost every monster in the book being thrown at you at some stage amongst the 5 short films inside one explosive package. Safe Haven, the meatiest and by far the best, will have genre fans foaming at the mouth thanks to director Gareth Evans’s (The Raid 1+2) relentless energy for directing action scenes. If you want quick bursts of Halloween horror, look no further.

When should I hide behind the couch?

Slumber Party Alien Abduction (amazing title) is a wonderful little nostalgia trip to the sort of rollicking 80’s adventure-horror styles of yore, but it packs a nasty punch as it goes on. Definitely some of the scariest screen aliens in horror history. Make this one a priority.
