This is a challenge, which your essay definitely makes clearer, but still not necessarily scalable. An organization typically wants to identify structures it can replicate. If it can’t do that, it gets harder to write effective job descriptions and recruit, for example — and then manage the people you’ve hired and who have justifiable expectations based on those job descriptions and subsequent role discussions. Which is to say, I totally agree, but the realistic/pragmatic approach for all of us may (unfortunately) be to seek organizations that already think the way we do, and already value our cross-functional strengths.
