What Does The Bible Say About Aliens?

One of my favorite scriptures is 1 John 1:3 which says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

The last part of this verse really stood out to me the first time I read it. It says the reason the world does not know us (Christians) is because the world does not know Him (God). This assumes that we are so opposite from the world that those in the world are confused by our lives! We see this in multiple places in the Bible.

Few examples: 1 Peter 1 starts off by saying “to the exiles.” The word ‘exiles’ means “aliens”. Later in the chapter, it also says “live out your time as foreigners in reverent fear.” Hebrews 11 shows us a long list of men of great faith throughout history and says one of the things they all had in common was that they admitted they were foreigners and strangers on earth (Hebrews 11:13).

What does the Bible say about aliens? It’s pretty clear…We are the aliens!

If we are the aliens, what exactly is it about us that makes us ‘foreigners’ in this life? Is it showing kindness? Holding the door open for others and saying thank you? Is it smiling and giving to charity? While all these things are good, this can’t be the difference because these are all things that people are capable of doing without faith in God. So, what’s the difference?

In it’s simplest form, the difference is love. As Christians, we should be known by our love for one another! 1 John 4 shows us that those who have not been born again can’t understand love or show it like we can as believers. The Spirit of God empowers us and teaches us to love like God loved us (Romans 8). We forgive even when it isn’t deserved. We bless others even when they curse us. We give even when we don’t have. We show patience even when it doesn’t make sense. We live joyful lives free of fear, shame, guilt, condemnation, habitual sin, selfishness!

Are you living your life in such a way that people think your ability to love and live like God is out of this world? If not, pray and ask God for wisdom on how to live like a foreigner on this earth.
