Why Rock Is Greater Than Sand

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24–27)

Is your house built on rock or sand? How can you be sure? It is important to note that the the man who built his house on the sand probably didn’t even know something was wrong with his foundation. He had a house just like the man with the solid foundation. It wasn’t until a storm came that the house collapsed and revealed the bad foundation.

How do you respond to challenges in life? When the rain of losing your job comes down, do you find yourself blaming or trusting God? When the streams of intense persecution for your faith rise, do you respond with hatred or love? When the winds of stress and anxiety creep up as temptations, do you give in and feel guilty or do you submit to God? If you want to know what your foundation is built on, think about how you react to the trials and challenges of life. If you find yourself praising God and loving him when things are good, but swearing at Him and doubting He exists when things are bad, you do not have a solid foundation.

A solid foundation is marked by unshakable and steady faith in God regardless of the situation (2 Corinthians 6:3–10). This only comes from hearing his words (reading your Bible!) and acting on them (believing what He says & doing what He says!). Do not just listen to the word and deceive yourself. Do what it says (James 1:22)! If you don’t, you will live a life of roller-coaster Christianity where you have highs and lows depending on circumstances. It’s not about denying the reality of your bad situation, it’s about not letting your situation define you! The next time you face a trial in life, ask God how to respond…And do what He says!
