Excellent piece. I especially appreciate that you highlighted the flawed electoral system as the primary barrier for minor party success. I’d argue, however, that all minor parties should coalesce and push for reforms at the state level — whether its instant runoff or some kind of proportional/multi-member system for the legislatures. It worked in New Zealand when they reformed from plurality to mixed-member proportional. The only problem is that most Greens think they need to make these reforms once elected, while failing to realize that they won’t get elected without the reforms in place first.
