Digital marketing has grown exponentially in the last few years and will continue to be the norm for marketing in 2022, as companies that don’t embrace digital marketing will find themselves struggling to compete in their respective industries. As the next five years play out, here are some of the emerging digital marketing trends that we can expect to see over the next five years.

Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is a digital marketing trend that allows brands to leverage social media personalities to reach more potential consumers. It’s predicted that by 2022, nearly 20% of brands will be using influencer marketing techniques — and for good reason.

Chatbots

5 years from now, chatbots will become a major marketing tool. These automated agents are already being used to answer customers’ questions, recommend products and even guide them through a purchase. As they get better at interacting with people, many experts expect that they’ll eventually be able to conduct transactions all on their own, cutting costs for businesses and making them more accessible to customers worldwide.

Virtual Reality

As virtual reality becomes more ubiquitous, businesses will have yet another way to reach customers and potential employees. Virtual reality can be used to make online shopping experiences more immersive, allowing customers to see products in their home settings or even create customized models of new cars or houses before they buy them. It can also make it easier for businesses to hire by simulating certain work environments and helping candidates experience what it’s like to work there.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

In just a few years, we’ve gone from Google Translate serving as an unrivaled machine translator to it being replaced by software that can understand and act on human language. NLP is quickly becoming an invaluable tool for businesses (and really, any organization). From customer service to finance to supply chain management, there’s virtually no industry that won’t be transformed by NLP over the next decade.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)

GANs are a relatively new AI model that use machine learning to generate data from scratch. GANs consist of two neural networks — one, a generator, creates data, and another, a discriminator, classifies input as either fake or real. Since it’s such a new technology, GANs are still limited in their capabilities; however, if they continue to develop at their current rate of growth (which is expected), we can expect them to do some seriously amazing things over the next decade.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented reality (AR) is one of those buzzwords that people love to throw around when it comes to digital marketing. Augmented reality apps use your phone’s camera and allow you to see extra information — usually digital content like an overlay or some sort of game — superimposed on your real-world view.

Personalization and Tracking

When it comes to digital marketing, personalization has always been top of mind. We know that content tailored to a specific audience will perform better than general content, so our goal is to provide experiences that speak directly to each user’s unique taste and preferences. These experiences will be hyper-targeted and easy for users to find through behavioral tracking tools and retargeting campaigns.

VR/AR Advertising

A survey by marketing agency Merkle found that 73% of retailers plan to use virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology for advertising purposes. These technologies are poised to become a major way that companies will market their products to consumers over the next few years.
