expectations
We stopped at the parking lot,
it was becoming clear we were
leaving in separate cars. I kept
thinking back to her midnight
messages from across the world.
She was trying not to.
I used our hug to draw close.
She didn’t swerve, but went stiff
when I met her lips.
I reared up and hovered-
then I kept coming back in,
as if she were one of those locks
you have to spin around once
before the combination would work.
She didn’t want to be rude so
she returned them in short,
thin pouts of diplomacy.
“You’re going to have to
stop kissing me.” she said cooly.
I tried to take it as a joke.
“Why?” I grinned.
“..because I’ve been
seeing somebody.”
Next time I’ll stick with the hug
so I can drive home sulking
and pretend I blew an opportunity.
