The Red Sox may now be the prohibitive REGULAR SEASON favorites, but it’s questionable whether or not acquiring Sale actually makes them any better in the playoffs.
Fact #1 — David Price has a career 2–8 record, with a 5.54 postseason ERA, and got bombed in his only 2016 postseason start.
Fact #2 — Rick Porcello has a 0–3 record, with a 5.66 postseason ERA, and got bombed in his only 2016 postseason start. Also note that 2016 was a rather large outlier for him, being only the third time in his career that he has finished a season with a ERA under 4.25.
Fact #3 — Chris Sale has never pitched a postseason game. And although he can be virtually unhittable, he can also be very hittable at times, having conceded three or more earned runs in a whopping thirteen different starts last year, including eight starts where he allowed four or more earned runs.
