The Brain Drain…After the Bar Exam

The Brain Drain…

The day after the Bar exam where nothing makes sense and no one understands you.

I have taken 2 Bar exams, and each time after it’s all done, I feel like someone has literally put a vacuum to my mouth and sucked the life out of me. I don’t know how else to explain it.

I can’t seem to explain this to my non-lawyer friends (bless their hearts). They think that I am so smart and all I have to do is read some rules and then regurgitate them in essays over 2 days. Piece of cake, rights?! NO. It’s so much more; and until you experience it for yourself, there’s no real way to explain it. I wish I could. That way, I wouldn’t offend people when I said “I need a moment.” Or, “No talking, please.” It’s not that I don’t want to be around them or appreciate their support, but the mere thought of having to form a thought is so daunting after I’ve had to think non-stop for 3 months before the exam, and then go into overdrive for the actual exam (a stressful 12 hours collectively over 2 days).

So, I say all this just to say to all the bar-takers out there who have experienced what I have experienced, be patient with your loved ones. They do mean well. Before you know it, life will be “normal” again, and you’ll be able to enjoy people’s company like you once did.

Until then, let your brain recover. Take a break. Your family and friends will understand.
