I don’t think it’s *ever* a good idea for the product to force the user. In fact it should be the other way around. Products should evolve to compliment user behavior… that’s exactly what we’ve seen with Google Inbox. Inbox _is_ an email product focused on tasks. It _does_ provide a way to prioritize and manage your incoming requests and to mark them as done.
Email is one of the oldest pieces of the Internet and it does need to evolve, but I’d argue that it *is* evolving. Tools like Basecamp actually use email for notifications to bring users in to the platform. They’re essentially an extension of the inbox.
