Sustainability: Nature as Inspiration

Homework for Emilio’s mini lesson

Recycling is an example of closed loop process. (image retrieved from sustainabletompkins.org)

Sustainability. It is defined as depleting natural resources and supporting long-term ecological balance. Everyone has an idea of what it is and what its goal is, however, not many know how to implement it. Using Nature’s Genius in Architecture, a Ted Talk given by Michael Pawlyn, talked about sustainability in urban areas using ideas from biology. Some of the things that he mentioned that stood out to me were there are several waste products that we are making that can be transformed into another useful product. This process is called a closed loop for the same product may start and end at the same place except in different forms. It occurs also in nature. For example, the waste of one organism can become the nutrient to another.
