Statement by Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO)

Since October 7, 2023 the world has witnessed over a year of genocide conducted by Zionist Israel against Palestinians in Gaza. The Israeli regime has been violating international laws, committing crimes against humanity and horrific war crimes since October 8, 2023. Zionist Israel has not acted alone, as the United States government continues to provide full political support, endless supplies of weapons and billions of dollars for genocide. All imperialist countries, including Canada, are complicit in supporting this genocide, as they support Israel politically, financially and militarily.
Since October 8, 2023, daily airstrikes and bombings by the Israeli Zionist army have targeted schools, hospitals, water, sewage and electrical infrastructure, residential buildings, mosques, and churches. According to the United Nations (UN), as of October 29, 2024, 87% of Gaza’s homes are destroyed or severely damaged. 90% of Gaza’s population is displaced, and many have moved upwards of 15 times. As of October 26, 2024; the UN reported over 80% of Gaza is under Israeli imposed evacuation orders, forcing one of the most densely populated places on earth into the crowded shelters of schools and encampments. Israeli Zionist forces are increasingly targeting the shelters of displaced Palestinians. One of the most horrific attacks was on September 10 against Al-Mawasi encampment, an area Israel had designated as “safe” for displaced Palestinians. In the middle of the night, Zionist Israeli forces bombed tents with US-made bombs, killing over 40 people and burying entire families in the sand of 9-meter-deep craters. The Israeli Zionist military also continuously targets Palestinians sheltering in schools. As of October 6, 2024 over 87% of schools are damaged or destroyed, including all of Gaza’s universities, as reported by the UN.
Gaza’s health care system is another target of Israeli Zionist forces, who have killed over 1,047 health and aid workers and destroyed or damaged 89% of hospitals with bombing and raids. The few remaining partially operating hospitals lack crucial medical supplies and even clean water.
Stop Israel’s genocide
More than any time in history, genocide is being live-streamed to our screens on social media platforms. As world opinion reacts to the horrific images by increasingly joining the side of Palestinians against genocide, those reporting the reality in Gaza to the world are also targets. Over 183 journalists in Gaza have been killed by Zionist forces as of October 31, 2024.
Every day, the death toll rises in Gaza as Israeli forces continue airstrikes throughout Gaza. As of November 9, 2024, over 43,552 Palestinians have been killed by official numbers, not counting over 11,000 missing under the rubble. However, estimates are much higher — On July 5, 2024, the Lancet medical journal estimated the death toll in Gaza could exceed 186,000 Palestinians due to malnutrition, lack of medication, and unsanitary living conditions. More recent estimates were published in The Guardian, where Professor Devi Sridhar, chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh, updated the estimates of the previous Lancet statistics to over 335,500 Palestinians killed. These unconscionable figures account for the health crisis across Gaza, as overcrowding and destruction of sewage, water and hygiene facilities have led to widespread preventable diseases, including polio. While Israel restricts humanitarian aid from entering Gaza, attacks aid deliveries and destroys agriculture, Palestinians in Gaza are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity and dying of Israel-imposed famine.
Israel has also expanded their war crimes and ethnic cleansing to the West Bank, where over 779 Palestinians have been killed as of November 9, 2024 since the genocide in Gaza began. Palestinians from both the West Bank and Gaza make up 10,000 prisoners held in Israeli jails, subjected to torture, sexual violence, lack of medical attention and death.
All of these shocking statistics are the daily reality for Palestinian children, mothers, fathers, and their families and relatives. Despite unimaginable devastation, Palestinians continue to show they have hope and determination to achieve the liberation of Palestine. Families in Gaza erect tents on the rubble of their homes, vowing to rebuild. Children practice the dance of the Palestinian dabke, holding tight to their culture. Makeshift classrooms under tarps try to maintain education for children in the second year without schooling. US-Israeli bombs and missiles cannot break Palestinian’s heroic struggle for self-determination, justice and peace. Palestine will never die; Palestine will never be defeated.
Lebanon and beyond: US-Israel’s expanding war and genocide
After 1 year of genocide in Gaza, Zionist Israel is escalating to a new phase of war, destruction and terrorism. Following the September 17–18 unprecedented terrorist attack by Zionist Israel, where thousands of pagers and later walkie-talkies simultaneously exploded across Lebanon and Syria, Israel unleashed a campaign of indiscriminate bombing across southern Lebanon and the capital Beirut. As of November 9, 2024 over 3,136 people in Lebanon have been killed by Zionist Israeli bombing, which has targeted residential neighbourhoods, villages, hospitals, journalists and UN peacekeepers.
Zionist Israeli forces continue to pound Lebanon with airstrikes and US-made bunker-buster bombs and missiles. The Israeli regime and their US imperialist backers are also attacking Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Iran, trying to provoke a wider regional war. On September 29, 2024, Zionist Israel bombed Yemen in coordination with the US, and on the same day, Zionist Israel bombed Syria’s capital, Damascus. The US and Britain have also launched attacks on Yemen, with airstrikes hitting the capital, Sana’a and other cities in Yemen on October 4 and October 17. On October 25, Zionist Israel launched a missile attack against Iran in an escalating string of attacks on Iran in recent months. Although the attack was repelled successfully by Iran, the message is that Israel and the US are pushing for a wider regional war with Iran, the backbone of the resistance movement, to regain their total hegemony in West Asia. US imperialism and Israeli Zionism are openly threatening the self-determination and sovereignty of countries in West Asia, as the world has seen since 2001 with the war and occupation of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen. This continued bloody military adventure of imperialist countries will cause immeasurably more bloodshed and devastation worldwide.
Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and expanding war and attacks in the region would not be possible with US imperialist support, funding and weapons. On August 26, 2024 the reported 500th consignment of weapons and munitions from the US was air delivered to Israel, in addition to 107 deliveries by sea. This totals 50,000 tons of weapons provided to Israel from the US since October 7, 2023.
Between October 7, 2003 and June 2024, US President Biden had sent 14,000 bunker-buster bombs weighing 2000 pounds each to Israel, along with thousands more bombs, artillery shells, missiles, ammunition and fighter jets. On August 9, the US Department of State announced it was sending an additional $3.5 billion of military aid to Israel, part of a $14.5 billion supplemental funding bill approved by US Congress in April. The next day, the US announced another $20 Billion of military aid, which includes $60 million worth of munitions manufactured by weapons companies in Canada.
Stop Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity
While Israel and the US commit this genocide against Gaza, the entirety of Palestine, and beyond, peace and justice-loving people around the world are continuing to come out to the streets in protest, expressing their condemnation of the brutal war crimes and crimes against humanity that Israel is committing daily against Palestinians in Gaza, in West Bank and also against Lebanon. More than ever, we need a united effort, a united front against Israel-US war and occupation in West Asia. We must mobilize, educate and organize to build a robust and effective protest movement alongside Palestinian, Lebanese, Yemenis, Syrian, Iranian, and Iraqis to defeat Israel and imperialism once and for all. A better world is not optional but it is a necessity. We can achieve it by building a united front against imperialism, with working and oppressed people worldwide.
