College Connections Appoints Andres Olivares-Del-Campo As Chief Scientist

To support its continued growth, College Connections, a leading data-driven marketplace for international students seeking tutors and mentors, is delighted to announce the appointment of Andres Olivares-Del-Campo to the newly created position of Chief Scientist.

Andres holds a BSc. in Physics with Theoretical Physics from Imperial College, London, together with a MAST in Applied Mathematics from Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge. For his PhD in Theoretical Physics at the University of Durham, Andres will soon be reporting his findings on
theories of dark matter and how it interacts with neutrinos. Andres has also worked extensively as a volunteer to make science more accessible — including with the Royal Society, the Durham University Physics Department and the International Particle Physics Outreach Group. Besides Andres’ academic credentials, he also brings first-hand experience of tutoring to College Connections.

College Connections has created a proprietary algorithm that matches students and educators based on the strength of their personality compatibility. Using its MentorMatch technology, students are able
to find the right educator to help them improve their results and achieve their goals.

In his new role, Andres will be helping to ensure that College Connections’ evidence-based solutions remain grounded in meaningful data analysis. This will make certain that our machine learning tools provide as much value as possible to all our stakeholders — be they parents, students, educators or
schools.

In addition to data analysis work, Andres will also work to develop our algorithmic solutions. While the tools of machine learning and data science are becoming more and more accessible, much has recently been written about the false positives, false negatives and over-fitting that undermines
meaningful analytics work.

With Andres’ experience at the cutting edge of both matter and the context
in which it operates, College Connections will be working to safeguard against evidence-based claims based on weak foundations.

Andres holds a BSc. in Physics with Theoretical Physics from Imperial College, a MAST in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and is finishing research into new theories of dark matter and how it interacts with neutrinos as part of a PhD in Theoretical Physics at Durham University.

Welcome to the team Andres — with your involvement, we could not be more excited to see what the future holds for our evidence-based solutions in delivering educational outperformance.
