Is Social Media Running Your Life?

What’s the first thing you do when you’re bored or waiting in line at the supermarket? If you’re like most people, your answer is probably to reach for your phone and scroll through social media.

The Problem

I would confidently predict that most people spend 2–3 hours of each day simply browsing the various social media sites. I’m not excluded from this boat, and routinely catch myself staring at my phone like a mindless zombie. We see a notification pop up, see what it is, and then spend the next 20 minutes looking at all the new posts.

Social media isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It allows us to stay connected to friends and family that we might otherwise not communicate with as much. The problem arises when we spend so much time on our phone that it detracts from the more important things that need to be accomplished.

The Solution

Ask yourself then, “How could my time be better spent?” You could listen to a PodCast, read a book, engage in actual conversation, etc. The point is to do something that provides value and enhances your life in some small way. What could you have learned that was spent instead staring at your phone?

If you use social media to watch value-based videos and read invigorating articles, then this is time not wasted. But if it’s spent looking at memes and watching cat videos, then there’s probably more productive things that you could be doing.

The Challenge

My challenge to you is to spend less time viewing worthless material and spending more time viewing things that will help contribute to a better life. You could even cut down by setting a timer and only allowing yourself 5–10 minutes for social media at a time.

Set the phone down and get started with my No Excuses Workout, which will be posted this Wednesday, July 26th.
