Day 9: Honesty is the Best Policy

During the Fellowship, YC asks us to fill in a questionnaire with our core metrics, which gets shared with the rest of the teams so we keep each other publicly accountable. We at Beek have been nailing our core metric for the past month: We’ve grown our weekly active users (WAU) by 25–45% every single week, until this one. To be honest, it’s mostly my fault. In the latest app release, I forgot to track the number of “App Opens”, which is what we use to measure engagement with the site, so that number plummeted. I felt terrible. It was a small mistake but it threw us off for a couple of days while we figured it out.

Today was the day we’re asked to fill in the questionnaire. We looked at our numbers: This week we slipped by -20%. Now, we know that number is probably not the “real” number of our growth because we weren’t tracking the people from the app, but we decided to take the hit anyway and put that as our metric. At Beek, we think that honesty (both with ourselves and with others) is the best policy, and I’m sure that we will turn it up next week when we nail it again. For now, we’ll keep our heads down and keep working.

Good things come to those who MAKE IT HAPPEN.
