I think this change was triggered not only when literal references became obsolete, but actually when they started limiting the possibilities of digital interfaces. Think material design’s principles: a physical button conceptually can’t really adopt motion and transform.

Thinking of voice interface de-skeuomorphized, I wonder if this will sound more like when we communicate with dogs: not quite like with human (even though some people do) not just basic instructions.
