Jour has been acquired by Alan for $20 million to expand our mental health care to Europe.

It’s January 2019. My cofounders — Bobby and Justin — and I are refreshing our Apple developer accounts to see if anyone is downloading the guided journal app we’ve built these past 2 weeks.

Our drive is simple: we want to help people build the habit of journaling and — using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods — guide them toward happier, healthier lives.

We see that mental health has never been a bigger issue for the global population and we want to provide a tool for mental health care that’s accessible, effective, and backed by science.

We start to see waves of pre-orders coming in daily, without any marketing or public communication. We start to feel that the small mental health app we built together could become something quite special.

Indeed, in the next two years, we’d go on to foster a truly special community of over 2 million people and build a small but mighty Jour team of 8 contributors spread out between Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.

The Jour app would go on to gain 30,000 reviews on the App Store, a 4.9/5 star rating, and daily comments about the impact it was having on people’s lives. These comments would be our greatest source of motivation.

And today, I’m excited to announce the next chapter: we’ve been acquired by Alan for $20 million to expand our mental health care to Europe.

We chose to join Alan because they believe in our approach to building products, they share our values and long-term vision, and together we will go there faster. We’re staying the same: our employees, our mission, and the Jour app will remain unchanged. With Alan’s support, we’ll have the resources to bring you the best mental health product we possibly can build.

Together with Alan, we’re building Alan Mind — a B2B offer starting at 5€ per month per employee — and a totally new version of Jour, which will include video lessons with mental health experts, access to one-on-one sessions with therapists, and in-company workshops about mental health. Jour will remain available as a standalone app and will be only be enriched by the new experiences we’re building.

This adventure would have never been possible without the incredible team who worked on Jour: Alice Mahoney, Joseph Smith, Marie Ehermann, Matthias Thomas Lamotte, Nate Mouyal, Tim Petricola, Hélène Blonz, and Xavier Seignard.

To our investors — Kevin Rose & True Ventures, Vladimir Bertrand & Secocha Ventures, Eléonore Oudéa (our very first believer), Jean de la Rochebrochard, Alexander Jordan (the very first check), Kenneth Schlenker, Jeremy Le Van (thanks to whom I’ve met Bobby Giangeruso & Kevin Rose), Pierre Valade, Ben Broca, Davidi Kitai, Basil Yaiche, James Beshara, Chris Putnam, Slava Kim, Cameron Dearsley, Lionel Mora, Cyrille Reboul, Paul Paulsen & Adam Bohbot — Thank you. You enabled us to do our best work and have been so supportive of our mission.

A special word to my dear friend Pierre Valade: you’ve been the best mentor and supporter I could have wished for during this adventure. I’m forever grateful for our friendship, your contribution to Jour, and the precision of your thoughts.

To Jean-Charles Samuelian, Charles Gorintin, and my fellow Alaners, we’re grateful for the trust you’re putting in us and are thrilled about the mission we’re accomplishing together.

We’re excited to continue a mission that we each care so deeply about. Here’s to what’s to come.

Maxime, Bobby & Justin
