Hi. You can achieve all these with tags, of course. The branches advantage is that they always ready to receive commits when you have to quickly release a hot fix. If you also have your continuous integration pointing to those branches, you can also save time in a hurry.

You could use only the branches needed by your development workflow and automate the merging process to avoid the overhead.
