I was a bit disappointed to see a very familiar Doctor-companion dynamic. I am incredibly impressed by Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. And I was hoping for a very fresh take on the companion role as well. I understand that it’s just a brief introduction video and they went for something cute and funny. But I think Doctor Who commercially successful enough to handle a more alternative take on things. I would love to see a companion who is not immediately comfortable and witty when faced with these crazy stories and monsters. Or a dynamic where the companion is not assigned to the role of the ‘caring half’ of the Doctor but rather encourages the Doctor’s typical Doctor-ness. And perhaps they learn to care, together? Would it be that horrible?
