Thanks for writing this piece, Justin. I appreciated the honesty and the insight. It reveals the complexity of human beings and their relationships, it also underscores the long-term impact of the things we’re taught as children. Still, there’s hope. Perhaps the more your dad is around people who are different the less ‘other’ they’ll seem. He may still be racist, hold racist attitudes towards them, but perhaps he’ll be less likely to endorse or go along with the views of a virulent racist who might suggest ‘killing all the — — ers or the s — cs.’ Perhaps on some level he’ll come to see that these people who look different, and who’s he’s been taught to think were totally different from him, in many ways are just the same. And that’s progress. Thanks for the piece. It was a worthwhile read.
