I think following are the major concerns for EMRs not bieng successful. I always lay focus on Ease of Use as the biggest change in the EMR industry.Even in some of my previous answers i have compared companies like SLACK and Robinhood which have completely changed the scenario of the industry they are in.

While Robinhoob is the go to app for stock trading in the US, the powerful integrations, UI and feature has made Slack the best instant messaging tool in the market.

But at the same time Healthcare EMR apps are much more complex then we can imagine. There are multiple challenges which have already been mentioned in the previous answers.

  1. UI and Ease of Use(How quickly can someone be onboarded)
  2. 70% of India is rural. Its hard to see someone using a EHR/EMR tool in a CHC/PHC (Community Health Centre/Public Health Centre)
  3. No Incentivise attached for Staff — Doctors, Nursing, Front Desk …..
  4. Realisation that EMR/EHR this is the way forward is not present in the public.
  5. Doctors are happy with the current Physical records.
  6. No Standardisation across different vendors. Banking was successful primarily because of the stringent CBS rules and regulations. If that can happene then EHR/EMR are successful.
  7. Hard to get staff on board speacially if they are used to an old tool. If its a new setup and the EMR/EHR is adopted from day 1 then its the best case scenario for example AIIMS Jodhpur. (Yes its a govt setup and doctors are using it)
  8. Tablet and Mobile ready solutions are not readily available with many EMR which are the major component for implementing EMR/EHR. For example how will you record a patients vitals when you are going bedside. Taking the notes on paper and translating the same on a desktop is like a donkeys job.
  9. Gamification — Asana has Gamified the entire User Experience that people want to use the tool more and more.
  10. Organisations generally start with all the Modules at one go. I believe that we should initiate with one Department, make it successful so people can realise its importance and then there is an incentive/interest for the same.
  11. Government Intervention, Standardisation and Regulation for EMR is required to make it mandatory. But this in itself is a very very challenging task.
