Peer-e-Kamil is Pakistan’s most famous novel if I am not wrong. I guess I am not wrong. Peer-e-Kamil is written by the renowned author Umera Ahmed. It stands as a timeless classic in Urdu literature.

To be honest, I was not interested in Urdu novels. One day, my colleague was reading an English novel, so I went to her and gave her some good novel recommendations. When I was walking back, she asked me, ‘Have you read Peer-e-Kamil?’ I was like, who reads Urdu novels, but I will give it a try. I read this novel in four days and it was a year ago and I am still obsessed with this book.

Peer-e-Kamil is a story of love, faith, and spiritual awakening. The story revolves around two main characters, Imama and Salaar, as they navigate their journeys. Umera Ahmed’s masterful storytelling and strong character development make this novel a captivating read.

Here is the truth. I am jealous of him, he is the crush of every girl although he is fictional but still.

Imama Hashim

On the other side, the main female character is Imama Hashim, she is a strong and devout individual. Imama has a deep connection to her religious beliefs and values. Imama faces personal conflicts with her family due to her unwavering commitment to her faith. In the entire story, Imama undergoes personal growth and a journey of self-discovery.

Here is the truth, every male reader wants a girl like Imama.

“What is next to ecstasy?
Pain.
What is next to pain?
Nothingness.
What is next to nothingness?
Hell.”

Peer-e-Kamil: Overview

Peer-e-Kamil unfolds a compelling narrative centered around Imama Hashim and Salaar Sikander. Imama Hashim is deeply connected to her faith and grapples with societal challenges, while Salaar, initially a complex character, struggles with his demons. The story goes through their journeys, and as Imama and Salaar’s paths intertwine, the story turns into themes of love love, faith, and spiritual enlightenment.

Salaar’s Emotional Prayer for Imama in ‘Peer-e-Kamil’

My favorite moment of Peer-e-Kamil is in chapter 8 when Salaar is praying to find Imama that moment touches my heart and almost brings tears to my eyes.

I am an ordinary human being with very human failings. My desires and my aspirations are all very ordinary. No one must have stood here and wept for a woman — how lower can my position, my debasement be, that standing in this pristine and sacred place, I should beg and plead for a woman? But I have no control over my heart or my tears.

I beg you to grant me one of the pure and noble women — I ask for Imama Hashim. I beg you to grant me one of the pure and noble women — I ask for Imama Hashim.
