Should students use generative AI?
A question that is consistently posed to many educators, yet there has never been a clear answer.
I am writing this blog as a future teacher who has been in an educational technology class since mid-August. First off, I would like to state that I am very well aware of the struggles with technology that many teachers have experienced. I understand that technology is inevitable in this day and age, but I would love to discuss the pros and cons of generative AI and the effect it may have on our students.
I believe that students should be educated about Generative AI and that it is not such a bad thing, however, students must know how to correctly use such information. Generative AI is not a way to get out of doing an assignment by any means, but it can be a helpful way for students to grasp a concept. For example, chat GPT can explain a subject in a way I may not be able to. However, Chat GPT, like any human person, can create falsehoods of information. Below is a video from ABC News talking more about how some teachers have addressed Chat GPT and how they are able to use it productively within their classrooms.
Overall, generative AI can help master certain concepts. It does have negative aspects, however, if this is taught effectively it can be used as a teaching tool. Plagiarism under no standards should be allowed, but I believe that AI is here to stay and should be recognized by teachers and students alike.
