Being an Anime enthusiast and a Clinical Psychology majors student I have picked out some of the most mind blowing psychological thriller anime which even though you end up watching it like a thousand times you never seem to get enough of it.

  1. Death Note

Old but gold! A high school student, Light Yagami, discovers a mysterious notebook called the “Death Note” that grants him the power to kill anyone whose name he writes in it. He takes on the role of a vigilante, but his actions draw the attention of a brilliant detective known as L, leading to an intense psychological battle of wits.

2. Psycho-Pass

Set in a dystopian future, society uses a system called “Psycho-Pass” to determine a person’s mental state and the likelihood of them committing a crime. When a young inspector and her enforcer partner start investigating dangerous criminals, they uncover unsettling truths about society and human nature.

3. Monster

Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a brilliant neurosurgeon, saves the life of a young boy who later grows up to become a dangerous serial killer. The anime explores themes of morality, identity, and the psychological impact of one’s choices.

4. Steins;Gate

A self-proclaimed mad scientist, Rintarou Okabe, accidentally discovers a way to send messages to the past, altering events and creating alternate timelines. As he delves deeper into time travel experiments, he faces dire consequences and psychological challenges.

5. Paranoia Agent (Mousou Dairinin)

A series of attacks by a mysterious assailant known as “Lil’ Slugger” terrify the city, and the story follows the detectives tasked with solving the case, leading them down a rabbit hole of psychological complexity.

6. Perfect Blue

A former pop idol decides to pursue an acting career, but her transition into the world of acting is marked by strange occurrences and a blurred line between reality and illusion, leading to psychological distress and a gripping narrative.

7. Serial Experiments Lain

Lain, a teenage girl, becomes increasingly involved in a virtual reality world known as “The Wired,” leading to a mind-bending exploration of identity, reality, and the impact of technology on the human psyche.

8. Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi)

Satoru Fujinuma possesses the ability to travel back in time and prevent accidents from happening. When he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit, he uses his power to try and save his loved ones and uncover a serial killer’s identity.

9. The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland follows a group of orphaned kids who are planning to escape from their orphanage after they come to know the dark truth behind the existence of the orphanage.

10. Paprika

In a world where therapists use a device called the “DC Mini” to enter patients’ dreams, a psychotherapist named Paprika must prevent the malicious use of this technology as it starts to blur the lines between dreams and reality.

These anime series offer thrilling psychological experiences, intricate plotlines, and deep explorations of the human mind, making them highly engaging for fans of the psychological thriller genre. Hope you like them!
