7 Family Friendly Hikes in Tahoe, CA
As comforting and cozy as your Tahoe home-swap may be, it’s good to get out of the cabin and see what beauty surrounds you. Check out these picnic spots and hiking trails that are perfect ways to explore Tahoe with the whole family.
1. Eagle Lake Trail

Eagle Lake trail is short 1.6 km (1 mi.) hike to a beautiful lake, perfect for picnicking and swimming. The trail has a bit of an incline, but is quite gradual and passes through gorgeous waterfalls and streams. This is a great activity for the whole family, even your four-legged family members can join too!
2. Sand Harbor

Sand Harbor is less of a hike and more of a park by the beach. It’s located on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe and offers tons of activities for the whole family. What’s most famous about this area is the unique water formations that make for some great paddle-boarding, sailing and kayaking, all available at the rental shop. Don’t forget to bring snorkeling gear and check out Lake Tahoe’s underwater life!
3. Webber Falls

Webber Falls is located in the outback of the Tahoe Wilderness and features two refreshing swimming holes. One is more shallow for the beginner swimmers and the other is deeper and closer to the falls. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds and tourist traps without doing much hiking, this is the place for you. So grab your swimsuits and sandwiches, and start driving north on the 89!
4. Brockway Summit

Brockway Summit is a great day-hike that ends with a spectacular view of Lake Tahoe. The trail has a gradual incline for about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) until you reach the top. The peak has plenty of flat rocks to relax on, so be sure to pack a snack for while you look out at the Big Blue!
5. Flora and Azaleal Lake

The Pacific Crest Trail provides numerous day hikes throughout the Tahoe Area. Starting from the Boreal parking lot, this hike is about a 3 km (2 mi) walk to the two lakes. The trail is generally flat and includes rocks to climb, beautiful views of Donner Lake and two stunning lakes at the end!
6. Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail

The Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail is a perfect hike for groups with younger children. This 2 km (1.3 mi) trail loops through a flourishing meadow and features wildlife sightings, educational signs and a wide variety of plants. So while you enjoy a beautiful hike through the Tahoe meadows, you can also learn about the local fauna and flora!
7. Donner Lake Loop Trail

Donner Lake is known as the miniature Lake Tahoe, except it’s warmer, less crowded and more accessible. You can either drive to the lake and just hang out on the beach, or walk along the perimeter trail. The park provides picnic tables, bathrooms and bbq grills as well as kayaks and paddleboards for rent. If you’re traveling to Tahoe during a hot summer, make sure to come cool off at Donner Lake!
