Success Stories — Miranda House: One of the best colleges in India
If you are a woman and stay in Delhi, Miranda House is the best institution to go to. For two years, back to back, this educational landmark has won the first place in the nationwide ranking by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Ofcourse, getting admitted might not be easy for everyone. But you can always give it your best. Recognised by the University of Delhi, it might be a woman’s college, but the institute interacts works with colleges that also have men. With a distinguished list of alumni, the institution is the torchbearer of excellence for decades now.
If you go back to its roots, Miranda House pioneered science education for women at the university of Delhi by beginning the B.Sc Honours course in Botany way back in 1948. Naturally, the alumni includes scientists, teachers and achievers in various fields. The college also has a museum, herbarium, library and a botanical garden. In addition, the Indian government has set up a research lab on tissue culture to study a botanical sub speciality.

The courses offered
At any given time, Miranda House educates 3500 students in social sciences, humanities and basic sciences. Take that to mean subjects like economics, geography, philosophy, political science, sociology, physical education, botany, chemistry, maths, physics, zoology, computer science and so on.
Admissions
You have to register online based on a pre-announced eligibility criteria — a minimum ‘cutoff’ percentage for each course. There are reservations for sportspersons and children of war widows and Kashmiri migrants. Foreign students are also admitted if they apply to Delhi University’s Foreign Students Registry. The fees range from Rs 14000 to Rs 16000 per year. Tibetan students are exempted from paying any fee.
Awards and scholarships
The college honours meritorious students in a number of ways. There is the Principal’s Award and Golden Jubilee Award for overall performance. Earlier, it used to be a rolling trophy and a merit certificate. But now, it carries a cash reward. The college also rewards exceptional students of extracurricular activities.
