Below is a publication from the laity of Ahiara Diocese originally published Sunday, 3rd September on “The Leader” newspaper.

With joy and gratitude, the laity of Ahiara Diocese, Nigeria offer an unalloyed “thank you” to His Holiness, Pope Francis for his magnanimity and patience in the course of Ahiara Episcopal crisis that has lingered about five (5) years over the appointment of the Most Re. Peter Ebere Okpaleke as the Bishop of our diocese Ahiara.

We regret the great scandal which this act of intransigence on the part of the clergy, religious and laity has exhibited in Nigeria and beyond! We thank you immensely for not having suppressed the Diocese that by justice, should have merited such treatment.

May we use this opportunity to apologize to our Apostolic Administrator, His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, His Grace Anthony Valentine Obinna, Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese, and our Bishop Peter Ebere Okpaleke for all the embarrassment all these years.

We assure you of our absolute obedience and sincere loyalty and plead for your fatherly forgiveness as we await the installation of our Bishop, Most Rev. Peter EbereOkpaleke, your wonderful choice for us, Ahiara Diocese, Nigeria.
