What isn’t Poetry?

“A poem is a window through which everything that passes can be seen anew.”

This line alone thoroughly summarizes the book “Poetry as Insurgent Art” by Ferlinghetti. One reads this book a simply concludes that there is no point. It’s jibberish with a bunch of meaningless sentences about nothing. Nothing in this book is related or connected except for the common theme of which the sentences are uplifting, poetry. That alone describes poetry though. It is unrelated, different, unique in it’s format, purpose, and public interest. Every sentence touches upon a different subject at every end and every beginning. This to me is calling out to all the readers, to make a connection somehow. Not all sentences will appeal to the reader but maybe a couple will. This author is longing for some connection with the reader to clearly show them what poetry is. As anyone can tell from reading this book is that you can’t SIMPLY tell someone what poetry is because it is anything and everything. This author doesn’t strive for perfection but challenges the reader to take advantage of the part that anyone can take part in to shape and “save,” in his words, the world. He attempts to create and uproar and get the audience pumped about poetry and he does a fantastic job. This author laughs at our “digital age” and attempts to recreate and bring back the poetry age to give a voice to everyone. It is a push to speak our minds about anything and everything and describe and see everything anew. Through poetry anything can be seen and felt and we need to embrace it to reshape our world because the “digital age” is causing us to ignore what’s around us and miss out. What isn’t poetry? What can’t poetry do? good question.
