About That Resolution to Get a Promotion or a Raise
If you’re like most people, you probably make this one every year. And, if you’re like most people the end of the year brings another look back at a failed resolution.

The fact is that most people who set goals don’t achieve them. Not because they don’t have good intentions, but rather because they don’t have a plan to achieve their goals. They’ve not thought through the goal, thought about what will be required to achieve it, put so much as one word down on paper for a plan, or made a commitment to that achievement.
“Goals” for most people are simply a “wish list.”
You don’t have to be trapped in that wish list mentality, but you do have to exert some effort to get away from it. It’s going to require time. Time away from recreation or leisure activities that you enjoy. Maybe some time away from family events. It must be a priority in your life or it won’t get accomplished.
Humans, all of us, are creatures of habit. We all have good habits and bad habits and unless we make an extraordinary effort we are generally hemmed in by those habits. That’s fine for the good ones but the bad ones can be a problem. Even recognizing a habit as “bad” can be difficult most times.
The good news is that you can break “bad” habits and replace them with “good” ones. And you can do it in as little as 21 days.
- Write down your goal. With a pen on a piece of paper.
- Find an accountability partner you can talk to about your goals and your plans.
- Make a plan in small steps that you can measure and write those down.
- Set a regular time to meet with your accountability partner to discuss your progress.
The key to achievement is accountability. You can make all the high-sounding plans in the world, but without being willing to be accountable to achieve them, to keep on track, you’ll most likely fall far short of the mark.
You can become an achiever in 2016. And you can do it in a structured way that has you looking forward to the hard work of getting it done.
