I tried CrossFit and was injured in the first 15 minutes… but now I LOVE IT
I tried cross-fit and injured myself in the first 15 minutes of the workout… I was deadlifting 185 lbs., very light when looking back to my high school and college football days. On rep #4 I felt a horrible, sharp pain in my lower back, going all the way down my leg… the sciatic nerve. I knew it right away, I couldn’t even bend over, my workout was finished. I would be out of commission for the next four weeks. This story could have gone two ways: 1) I never try cross-fit again and talk about how everyone gets injured and how it’s for fools, or 2) I stay patient, blame no one but myself, take the injury as a blessing in disguise (as a wakeup call not to push it too hard when being new at something and put away the ego), and give it another go when I’m all healed up.
I took the latter and cannot say enough positive things about cross-fit. I haven’t had this good of a workout since doing two-a-days in high school football. My body is sore, but in the good way. Muscles I forgot I even had are feeling the workouts and I can’t wait to get back in the gym to master the hand stand push ups, ring muscle ups, and perfect my technique on the row machine.
Signing up for cross-fit was not an easy decision due to other hobbies and commitments but there is always time to add one more activity if you prioritize it.
It isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking to step up your gym routine and join a fun group of motivated individuals, sign up for a cross-fit class. Just be careful with the weight!
