As you walk down the isles of your grocery store, looking for the perfect snack, you come across a bag of takis. Takis are rolled corn tortilla chips known for their spicy, intense taste. Although, there has been a lot of controversy on whether or not they are healthy. The truth is, Takis cause several health problems that should be addressed.

Picture example of what Takis look like.

Takis have a high concentration in carbohydrates, fat, sodium and are low in nutrients that bodies needs to function. According to, greatist.co,

“They’re also considered an “ultra-processed” food. Eating lots of ultra-processed foods has links to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.”

Takis are very processed foods and have low nutritious ingredients. As delicious as they may be, they can cause dangerous diseases which could possibly lead to death. The sheer amount of the chemicals can cause dehydration, headaches, and bloating. According to isitbadforyou.com, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Kidney Failure, Diabetes, Heart disease and Osteoporosis are just some of the long term concerns and effects of eating takis.

Hospitalization is a serious concern for any of the side effects takis could cause.

Lab rats have ingested the artificial colors Takis use to make their snack look visually appealing, but the studies show they can cause tumors in lab rats and erratic behavior in children. Takis contain the artificial colors FD&C Yellow 6 lake and FD&C Red 40 lake, which can be dangerous, especially in children which is their main demographic.

There are many alternatives to the Takis chip that are healthier yet still tasty. Some examples of chips that are still spicy but very tasty and less dangerous are hot cheetos and doritos dinamita. If you are looking for very healthy chips, some substitutions are Beanitos Better Cheddar Pinto Bean, Just Pure Foods Zucchini Chips, and Rhythm Superfoods Kale Chips Kool Ranch.

Even though Takis are a dangerous snack, people can still enjoy Takis as part of a balanced diet. A diet needs to include meat, protein, veggies and fruits, but an occasional snack like Takis is ok!
