Should Designers Code?

The thing that’s always irked me about the “designers must code” meme is the underlying assumption that having deep expertise in a field of design is somehow not enough. “Sure, we value your design contributions, but what will you do to earn the rest of your paycheck?”

An expert coder who doesn’t design? Invaluable. An expert designer who doesn’t code? Half an employee. Read between the lines and you’ll see the conscious devaluation of an entire discipline.

I’d rather hire a great programmer and a great designer who work well together than compromise either skill set by demanding they share a brain. But I hope our competitors hold out for the unicorns…
