In the age of social media and homogeneous pages, it’s fun.
Why My New Blog Isn’t on Medium
Dan Abramov

It’s funny you mention it. Earlier this week, a colleague mentioned that the Internet used to be really cool when those that were “on it” had pages they had made themselves and that were decked out with custom features (even if those were sometimes snippets copy/pasted from web development forums). I think we can all agree that Geocities, Angelfire and their contemporaries were A+. Now, the best we can hope for is a custom banner and profile picture, and maybe a witty short description, otherwise, most of people’s web presence essentially comes out of a single template.

I’ve been thinking about throwing together a simple homebaked blog, mainly for the technical challenge of putting a decent system together from scratch; I’ll definitely revisit the idea now!
