One of our first photos as a team, Meric playing with the 360° camera. Pretty much our personalities, in a nutshell.

Exploring Our Interests Further:

As we came together for the first time, we each grabbed our post-its and sharpies and went to work—throwing out as many of our interests as possible. Next, we went over each of our post-its and talked over how the related to the brief, what was mixed reality, and even some of our issues surrounding the mixed reality/augmented reality/virtual reality realm.

Now it was time to dig deeper and find what would, not just be a rich exploration space, but also a meaningful topic that we each had a connection to. One of our main goals was to establish a topic we could all get behind so that if a certain approach doesn’t work, we at least have our common interest to rally around.

Over the next few days we would be researching some facets surrounding disability, aging, and mixed reality. Looking at current technologies and design as well as more general research surround these six areas:

Social VR/AR
The Senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell
Aging Population
Motor Impairment
Learning and Cognition
Happiness and Joyful Interactions

Synthesis Session I:

While we expect to have many synthesis sessions, we got together for our first later in the week to discuss what we had found. This would serve as a foundation for our territory and stakeholder maps. We mapped out of findings to help us better visualize where what direction we would take our next steps.

Moving forward, as we start to narrow our topic on mixed reality and aging we saw four distinct areas arise: care, independence, emotion, connections. And so we began to build our territory map around the following questions:

How might mixed reality be leveraged to help people age well?

Territory Map & Presentation:

After our synthesis session, we started compiling more articles and sources for our research. It began to form a rich and exciting picture for us. Below is a sampling of what we have been looking at.

While we will continue to gather resources, we developed our territory map. Looking at the areas of care, health, independence, lifestyle, and emotion as we move forward into the exploratory research stage of our project.

The Hybrids — Stage One Presentation:

We have sent along our PDF presentation as well as a video of us presenting to our Microsoft liaisons.

Stage One Fun:

No body on our team is very serious, least of all me. So, I am hoping to start a process blog trend of highlighting the fun times we have during each stage of the project.

What’s more fun that playing with the 360° camera?
