The Real 411 On Protein

First and foremost, I do not recommend that this information be applied to every single persons lifestyle because there are individuals with different needs. I only encourage people to utilize supplements because they are helpful to people that acknowledge their deficiencies in health or lifestyle.

I worked in a supplement shop for quite some years and before ya’ll say that doesn’t make you a doctor, yes thank you I am more than aware because I certainly did not spend 13 years in University attaining a doctorate. But anyhoo. I can say that I learned a lot about protein and what it actually does for the body.

Hopefully most people, okay probably only about 30% of people, know about macro nutrients. Basically I would like to guestimate that approximately 70% of the population that entered into this nutrition store I worked in, knew absolutely nothing about protein, carbs and fats. The first thing that pops into my mind is, “did you people not take the mandatory fitness class in high school?” because I did and I suffered through all those beep tests because I was chubby, not fit and boy was it embarrassing.

My favourite is when a customer comes in and they’re like, “Yes I’m here for the WHY protein, point me to the brand WHY.” Laugh Out Loud.

Whey is the word and it is not a brand of protein, it is protein. It is essentially made from cheese, sort of. All protein brands make their products from whey isolate, whey concentrate, whey hydrolysate, ext. Unless it is a vegan, soy, or egg protein. There are without a doubt better brands than others. But the main thing we need to know here is that Whey is okay for us to consume. Whey protein powder is actually a brilliant creation.

It is fairly easy for people to consume complex carbs, and healthy fats (Omega 3, ext.) by buying foods from the grocery store. A few examples of complex carbs would be brown rice, sweet potato, and other vegetables. Healthy fats can be found in foods such as fish, eggs, coconut oil, olive oil, exc. Protein is available minimally in vegetables, for example, a cup of brocoli has about 6g of protein, whereas a chicken breast has 31 grams.

Sometimes people don’t have the money or time to eat 6 chicken breasts a day in order to attain their goals. That’s where protein supplements can help. I myself have seen the effects of protein on myself. Adding more protein into your diet can be your best friend. It will give you more energy but not nervous energy that you get from caffeine, just natural energy that you’ve been missing your whole life. Protein will make your body look different. It will make your diet more balanced and help you to feel fuller for longer during the day.

Protein gives you energy because it’s in charge of your muscle tissue. It repairs tissues, creates chemicals, and the building block that makes up a large percentage of your body. Someone can eat a ton of carbs and a small amount of protein but still be skinny because their muscle tissue is basically non-existent and this person probably is underweight. This is what we like to call skinny fat. The components of your body will not be strong if you do not eat enough protein.

Protein will help you lose fat. It won’t help you lose weight necessarily, but fat. When you add more protein into your diet, you build or maintain muscle — and muscle burns fat. You don’t even need to workout if you don’t want to. Diet comes first, complex carbs, health fats, and lots of protein. Adding protein supplements into your diet can make fat loss easier because often times a Whey Isolate will have little to no grams of carbs or fats. Therefore the 85 calories in each scoop that you’re getting is only from the 20 grams of protein, meaning you can’t gain fat. It is impossible to gain a pound of fat from calories that are from protein isolate. If you eat too much protein, you’re body will discard it instead of storing it like it would with excess carbs or fats. The trick is to only eat the amount of carbs and fats that your body needs, and then eat as much protein as you like.

Lastly, protein makes you feel fuller because it’s slower metabolising in the body than carbs and fats. When you eat carbs (depending on the complexity of them) you’re body will burn through what it needs pretty quickly and then store the rest. Protein takes some time to breakdown in the body and makes you feel fuller than if you were to only eat a carb. So therefore, eat more protein to curb your midnight cravings. Also, start your day with a high protein shake, egg white omelette, oatmeal with a scoop of protein and berries ext..It gets your metabolism fired up for the day.

I hope you enjoyed this article about proteins. There’s still so much to talk about regarding this topic. But this was only a basic blog entry about protein!
