Sami Fasse is a Cincinnati Ohio based designer who frequently practices user centered design in her work. I've chosen her to study, as she is a friend and I have always admired her work aesthetically, and I have been interested in how she applies her talents practically. For this essay, we looked at her app prototype for Bujo-a digital bullet journal app, designed to help with organization.

project description

This project was focused on helping people who have an on the go lifestyle keep up with organizational demands. The question this app posed was would this app be more beneficial for people than an easy to forget physical bullet journal. This project utilized user centered design because it focused on measurable productivity fluctuations.

methods

The main method of user centered design that Sami used was research. She conducted user priority surveys and surveys with the use of wireframe, and consumer testing. She also tested things such as phone screen readability and information contrast. She kept the user in mind when creating the layout and design. She wanted to keep the design minimalistic so the user would feel calm and at ease when planning their life.

target audience

Her target audience was college students in need of more organization. She focused on students who had a spectrum of experience with planning and organization.

Value of user centered design

User centered design helped make this project more realistic and obtainable. Without keeping the audience in mind, this project would lack its research and functionality as an organization app.

My takeaways

After interviewing Sami, I took away the importance of having a target audience in mind. I think one of the biggest successes seen in this project is focusing on students, but a wide range of students that display a need for this app. I found the amount of research and consideration put into this project shows in the end result. I also got to see how user centered design can have an affect on aesthetic choices, that have a deeper purpose than just good looks.
