on experimentation

Musing upon the notion of experimentation within art I have considered several maxims. There are no rules; nobody knows what the hell they are doing in this wild world. Don’t ask permission, simply play, create, and enjoy the process. Some of the best things are made with no outcome or expectation in mind.

“Work done with anxiety about results is far inferior to work done without such anxiety, in the calm of self-surrender.” (The Bhagavad Gita)

Many of us are stuck as we wait for permission to begin our work. We wait for the day when everything will be perfect, when we have finally become masters of our craft. Yet, within art, as in yoga, there is no mastery, only practice. We can choose to create each day. We can choose to experiment without fear of judgement, without wish for praise and commit ourselves the work we become lost in.

For within this flow we find freedom.
