Launched in March 2014, Malaysia, Honda City price Malaysia is from RM 73,836 is nearing the final legs of its model life for this generation. I see the mid-life-update of the car in March 2017, and following that is a full-hybrid variant in four months later.

Despite being the oldest model in its class, the City remains the stronger seller in its class, although the updated Toyota Vios have closed the gap significantly.

Specifications for Honda City 2019:

  • Engine: 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated, port injection
  • Power: 120 PS at 6,600 rpm
  • Torque: 145 Nm at 4,600 rpm
  • Transmission: CVT-type automatic
  • Safety: Six airbags (V-grade only), electronic stability control (VSA), ISOFIX
  • Price: RM 73,836 to RM 86,983

Specifications for Honda City Hybrid

  • Engine: 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated, port injection
  • Power: 138 PS (combined output petrol engine and electric motor)
  • Torque: 170 Nm (combined output petrol engine and electric motor)
  • Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch automatic
  • Safety: 4 airbags, electronic stability control (VSA), ISOFIX
  • Price: RM 92,172

Including the Hybrid, there are atotal of 4variants to opt from:

The entry 1.5S variant (RM 73,836) comes with the following standard features:

  • Halogen reflector headlights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Keyless smart entry with engine push start button
  • Fabric seats
  • Remote operated boot release
  • Standard display infotainment (no touch screen), 4-speaker
  • 2 airbags
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS with EBD and BA)
  • Electronic stability control (VSA)
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Emergency Stop Signal
  • ISOFIX

Moving one level up is the 1.5E variant (RM 79,955). It adds:

  • Side mirror-mounted turn signals
  • Automatic air-conditioning with rear air vents
  • Front centre console with armrest
  • Rear centre armrest with cup holder
  • Cruise control
  • Paddle shifters
  • 6.8-inch touch screen infotainment, 4-speakers
  • 4 airbags
  • Reverse camera (multi-angle)

The highest specifications 1.5V (RM 86,983) adds:

  • LED headlights
  • LED front fog lights
  • LED tail lights
  • Leather seats with leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob
  • Soft-padded dashboard
  • 8-speaker infotainment system
  • 6 airbags

Curiously, the most expensive Honda City 1.5 Hybrid variant (RM 92,172) has less features than the regular petrol 1.5V, mostly due to the added cost of the more powerful yet more fuel efficient hybrid powertrain. The Hybrid drops some of the 1.5V’s features down to more basic:

  • Halogen headlights (no fog lights)
  • 4 airbags
  • Fabric seats
  • Urethane-wrapped steering wheel
  • Standard dashboard (no soft padding)
  • 4-speaker infotainment system

Is the Hybrid worth buying?

Yes if you are looking for added performance. It’s more powerful and is fuel asaver. And you can get the most features, performance aside, it is best to stick to the regular petrol. The 1.5V variant is the pick of the range.

Is it reliable?

The City Hybrid is a regular full-hybrid. It does not require external charging and it is a mature technology, now in its third generation. It is not uncommon for Japanese hybrids to exceed 200,000 km of service life with no change to the hybrid components.

So overall, YES! Honda City 2019 is a better car after all this years. And it’s the choice for anyone who don’t know which car to buy!
