Ohhh good question - for me, there is safety in holding bad memories. If I've been hurt or burned, remembering why means that I can prepare and protect myself if it happens again.

But I think my perspective is problematically cynical - something that I hold onto at the sacrifice of vulnerability.

But I wonder what comes first, holding on to good memories enough feel safe, or feeling safe enough to hold on to good memories?
