100 Years of US Transportation

1900–1910

Police didn’t always ride in a cars that had lights and strips, in the past they road in a simple car that sometimes had a small place to put criminals. Usually they brought in a spacial car that was a van that could hold many prisoners.
This picture was drawn by W. A. Rogers who was a New York political cartoonist, he worked for the “New York Harold” and did many political cartoons for them. This one is about how people have to wait for trains for hours because the company choose when the run the trains.
Railroads were built throughout the US so that trains could carry heavy cargo to places that usually had to wait for mouths for a boat to come. This train s transportation cargo through a forest to deliver it to a town in the US.
Here is a picture of a boat that is carry many immigrants that want to start a new life in the US. They are running away from the home country because of the better life that awaits them in the US.
If you wanted to buy a car on the cheaper side this was the car for you, many did like its looks but if you were buying a car for looks you could find a better looking car. This car ran for about $2,000 which was expensive but not over the top expensive for most people.
The Yale was a touring car that was equipped with a Tonneau which was a fancy cover that covered seats and cargo to keep it out of the sun and away from thieving fingers.
This car was released to the public in 1908 and was sold for around 850–900 dollars. At such prices the Model T at times comprised as much as 40 percent of all cars sold in the United States.
This was the first “true” car that car on gasoline the was produced by Studebaker, the chassis was built by Garford and then shipped by train to Studebaker were it was assembled and made into the first gasoline car.
If you wanted yo buy a stylish car then this would be on the list, this car was also used as a touring car. Touring cars were cars that were maned by one person and you could pay him to hope in and he would drive you around the city showing and telling you all about the city.

1910–1920

This car was made throughout the 1910–1920. This is a two door Bugatti .This car was also known as the “type 13”
The sizaire naudin was made in the 1912s in France. This car is known as a sports car.
The model T was one of the cheapest cars that worked well and looked good, it went for around $850 but you could also find some going for $260. The reason was that Ford used his new way to help save money when building the model T.
This was new way to travel that started out with a modified version of a child's toy. Alley bandits used them to rob people and then stay ahead of the police. After a while they were released into the public and a fast and easy way to move around the city.
This poster shows how much the Stewart 1-ton truck cost which was $990, it also states that it matches trucks that cost up to $1800.
Even though Chicago had many cars people would still walk because not everyone could afford to buy and maintain a car.

1920–1930

It was during this time through roughly the 1920s that railroads enjoyed their greatest dominance and profitability. There was nearly 255,000 railroad miles in 1920. It was a great way of transportation for people back in the 20’s.
During WW1 the development of airplanes which were then in their making, so that by the early 1920’s they were much more reliable and capable of flying longer distances and carrying heavier loads. This made possible the carrying of large shipments of mail.
Travel Air engineers Herb Rawdon and Walter Burnham designed the Model R in anticipation of Walter Beech’s annual need for a racer. The engineer position was a well paid position and changed many civilians lives.
This is a civilian who competed in the Thompson Trophy race. He beat military planes in this race, this gave civilians activities to participate in.
This is the Model T Ford, this car sold for $850 when it first released to the public, later the price dropped to as little as $260, because Ford passed along the savings from his production innovators.
American car manufacturer Henry Ford introduced the assembly line, and by 1920 it took only 93 minutes to assemble a Model T.
This is President Calvin Coolidge and President Gerardo Machado of Cuba, traveling in Cuba in 1928. He traveled with one or two guards usually and he sat in the back of a car as they traveled to their destination.
This car, Model Ford T, could reach speeds up to 45 mph and that was a much faster v=commute to work then riding something like a horse or walking.
American aviator, engineer and Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Lindbergh poses with the the plane he used to make the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic. This then made it easier for everyday people to cross the ocean.
The open-topped BTC Summer Cars offered Charm City customers. This was an easy way to get around and travel cities.

1930–1940

1940–1950

The George Washington bridge was built over the Hudson river.
In the 1940s, the city had a full network of streetcar lines that connected most of the huge city to its still-impressive downtown. This shows how the people built the railroads under the city, instead of building it around.
This was a bus terminal that was called the GREYHOUND it was located in Manhattan. It was a station that you could go to and buy a ticket to take a ride on a GREYHOUND bus.

1950–1960

This is a picture of a streamliner which was built to have the least air resistance to make it a faster train.

This was an ad for the firefighters so help get support and raise money to help pay for the expenses and running and maintaining a fire engine. It was hard not to help them because without them fires would be harder to stop and there for fires would have caused more damage through history.
This car was meant to be the best car ever made, it was built to be powerful, big, tall, and made of fancy crome.
This is a 1951 Crosley Hotshot that was made in 1951 and was not loved very much because of the way it looked.
This is a picture of the SS United States which was built by William Francis Gibbs, the ship was a luxurious cruise ship that was built to beat the Trans-Atlantic speed record.

The 57 Chevy was made in 1957. It was introduced to everyone in 1956 for the starting year 1957. This car is known as a 2 door station wagon.

1960–1970

This is a regular bus that was an easy way of everyday transportation, if you were white of course.
This was a picture of civilians taking the airplane in 1960, this was thought to be the golden age of planes because the served exquisite food in china wear.
This is a picture of freedom riders that used transportation to relay a message that segregation is wrong.
This is the early construction phase of BART’S Trans-bay tube. This made it easier for people to go from Oakland to San Francisco.
This was the 1969 Firebird, this was the cool car to have, and you paid for that. This car first started selling for $4,336.
This had to be one of the most recognized sports cars in the world in the 60’s which cost $5990.

1970–1980

This is a car that is drive down a road that is under construction.
This is a Dodge Charger that was released on 1978 in america. It was manufactured by dodge division of Chrysler.
This is a Mustang Mach 1 and it was released in the 1970s. People who bought them wanted to change up the style within their budgets.
This is a man that is flying in a luxurious plane.

This bike was called a Can-Ams and was one of the first high speed dirt bikes going at around 80 mph in the dirt. Few survived to this day thanks to the owners who loved them so much that they preserved them through the decades.
If this car was recalled it would have the been the largest and longest recall ever because of the 21 million cars that had the defect. The car would appear to be in parked but then it would slip into forward.
This car had been around a away before people stared to find out, Ford had to have a recall of the car afterwards due to the car bursting in flames if it was ever rear-ended.
This boat was made a designed to be a floating hotel or nowadays it is know as a cruise ship.
This bus was taking a turn in a residential area due to some sort of thing that was blocking its normal path.

1980–1990

Here is school that is going on a field trip.

This was a road that was constructed in the rural part of the US. This road is spanning a great distance and helped get products across the country to places that usually did not have access to these products.

The Dover Bridge was build to help get people across the Choptank River but also allow cargo ship and passenger ships to still get to the Chesapeake Bay.

1990–2000

This car was made in the 2000. It’s known as a sports car but sometimes is used as a regular driving car. Its a two door black car with the word king on it.
This car is from the 1990s and is a two doored black car, no real design to it. There is some type of bump on the hood.
